Welcome to the October blog series Scaring Myself Silly. This is a series of interviews with writers, bloggers, readers and authors about the spookiest books they’ve read, real life scary stories and of course, scary films!
My first guest is Torrie Lennon. Torrie is an Australian book lover and gamer with a passion for dark fantasy, sci-fi horror and litrpgs.
Originally from Brisbane and currently moving around with her family for the military, Torrie spends her time as a full time mum to her toddler, and in her down time enjoys cooking, reading, gaming and talking about her favourite books and video games on social media under the name Taleswithtorrs.
I had questions for Torrie Lennon. Get ready to scare yourself silly reading the answers.
- Imagine you’ve picked up a book and all you know is that it has your worst fear in it. What’s the book about?
Demon clowns. They probably live under my house or an old house that’s dark and creeks, and they come out of a specific old cupboard that is bolted to the ground and there is a ‘portal’ they emerge of in that back to take the victims of the house back into to feed.
2. Have you ever seen a ghost? Do you know anyone who has?
I had two imaginary friends when I was a wee girl they where both little girls and were dressed like dolls, their names I haven’t been able to remember since I stopped ‘needing them’. I’d forgotten about them completely until I was 14 and a random lady on our family holiday in Ireland came up to my mum and I and told us about these girls and explained them in detail and that they wanted me to know they still check in to make sure I’m okay but other kids need them now too… It was such a strange experience.
3. What was your first introduction to horror? Can you remember?
My first introduction was Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. It had just come out and my parents put me to bed, I would’ve been maybe 9 and I commando crawled out of my room to sit behind their chair and watch it. At the time I was terrified and didn’t sleep well for a week! But now it’s one of my favourite movies.
4. The best scary film out there from the last decade?
Midsummer. I was thinking about it for days!
5. Do you believe in ghosts?
100%.
6. Is there a scary book or film out there that you’re just not brave enough to watch or read based on the reviews or trailers alone?
Pandoram. It’s a scifi horror movie with cannibalistic mutants and it looks a bit claustrophobic.
7. Do you like Halloween?
Absolutely! I wish it was bigger in Australia. I live spooky stories but also the origins of it I find are super interesting coming from a Celtic festival.
8. Why do you think people enjoy scary stories so much?
Scary stories give you adrenaline but also at the end a sense of something out their being scarier then the world and humans themselves.
9. Is there a place near where you live that is quite spooky? Can you tell us about it?
I live near one of the most haunted houses in Australia, it’s Monte Cristo homestead 30 min drive outside of Wagga Wagga. There have been several tragic deaths, disturbing events and a murder in 1960 of a caretaker found on the front porch.
10. What’s a horror book that you think more people should read?
Mexican Gothic: remote creepy mansion with some sinister family secret. Yes thank you!
11. What is something you watched as a kid and probably shouldn’t have because it kept you up at night?
Wolf creek. I had no right sneaking into the cinema to watch wolf creek to prove to some teen boy that I was cooler than the other girls in high school.
12. Do you have a regional monster/spirit legend where you’re from? Can you tell us about it?
There is a monster that lives in the wetlands in Australia called the bunyip. It lives in natural waterways like rivers swamps and billabongs and is said to drag women and children under the water.
